100 Refutations: Day 77

This Is Not a Metaphor

A metaphor
has died.
Beaten
once and again
by a wooden
ruler
on the nape of its neck.
The murderer
has picked up
a kitchen
knife,
to dismember it
starting with the stomach.
No frills, no poetry.
In the shower:
the liver,
the members,
the kidneys.
In the sink,
the brains.

The pale
heart
the literary symbol
comes undone in the water.

The metaphor
buried
preserves beside it
one ID:
my uncle’s,
murdered
and dismembered
without poetry
worth anything
for his
resurrection.
